Remington F5790 LED Pivot & Flex Men's Rechargeable Cord/Cordless Foil Shaver

Reviews of Remington F5790 LED Pivot & Flex Men's Rechargeable Cord/Cordless Foil Shaver

1.) The best Remington foil shaver that I've used

I've used Remington and Norelco electric razors for decades, but the Remington F5790 is the best foil shaver I've ever used. It shaves closer--with less effort and irritation--than any other shaver I've used. And, it's effortless to clean.

In my opinion, the secret to a close shave with any electric razor is skin preparation. For years, I tried everything I could find to prepare my skin and beard--including powders and lotions recommended by shaver manufacturers. But, nothing has worked as well as washing my face with ivory soap. 'Yep, you heard right, ivory soap. (All I do is wash with it in the shower, and when my skin dries, it's perfectly prepared for shaving.) 'Hard to believe? Well, try it.

My wife bought this as a gift. She chose Remington because her father had worked for Remington-Rand Corporation in a division unrelated to shavers. It is smoother than an almost new Remington rotary blade shaver she gave me last Christmas. It is also smoother cutting than a 1990 vintage Braun I have, even with a new screen and cutters on the Braun. One surprising thing about the Remington is that the cutters and screen do not seem to fill up with whisker shavings like other shavers I have used. I would never have bought another shaver, but my wife insists I am too rough and scratchy.

3.) *Close Shave* And *Easy* To Use.

First off, I just have to say that I have limited experience with using an electric razor. The only one I've tried came as a detachable head with a hair trimmer, so I'm no expert.

Second, I don't have heavy facial hair on my cheeks but it does grow coarse and heavy on my chin and upper lip. I found the REMINGTON F5790 SHAVER simple to use and gave me a smooth and close shave like a regular razor. And I didn't experience any irritation to my skin that I read can happen when you first start using an electric shaver and no ingrown hairs.

========== HERE'S WHAT IT COMES WITH ==========
1 Shaver/--/Plastic Head Guard/--/Shaver Cleaning Brush/--/1 Power Cord (that can be used Worldwide)/--/Instruction Pamphlet (with shaving and cleaning tips)

========= THE GOOD ==========

***The F5790 can be used with/without power cord.

***5-minute quick charge good for one shave.

***Charging light and "battery fuel-gauge" (illuminates when on) that indicates how much battery power is left.

***Pop-up Trimmer.

***Shaver head is washable and the foil guard comes off for easy cleaning, but you can't use it in shower.

***Easy to use and gives a pretty decent shave.

========= SMALL GRIPES ========

***No holder or stand

***Instructions say to charge for 24-hours before first use but when I plugged it in the fuel gauge light just continued to blink, so I'm not sure if it was already fully charged. The next day it was still flashing and when I turned it on--after removing the power cord--the gauge just read all green, until I turned it off. So either the unit was fully charged, which means that the flashing light means "fully charged," or there's no way of knowing when the shaver is finished charging (unless it just glows steady when charging). The recommendation is to let the battery run low before charging again, so I'll just wait to find out which is which. No biggie since you can use it with the cord attached to it anyway.

I found the F5790 easy to use and provided a nice close shave. I'm happy with it and this should save me money that I would be spending on shaving cream and razor cartridges. But I might have a different MODEL # than those who have had a negative experience with this Remington product because I've noticed that the reviewers posted a different model number.

UPDATE:
The battery gauge does show when it's charging. The lights will illuminate from the last point of the charge, say 20% and go up to the top. As the battery fills, more lights show up until the whole gauge is flashing. So the unit was fully charged when I received it.

I must say that I'm surprised that a good number of people had a negative experience with this product. Perhaps my opinion is influenced by what I am used to. I have an inexpensive electric shaver in my car. It cost less than $20 at the local drug store. I don't have much of beard to shave, so I'm over and done with it before I pull out onto the highway. As I shave with the cheap model, I can hear and feel the whiskers being hacked away. That's how I know it's working. I feel my skin and think, "Good enough."

With this thing, I didn't hear or feel anything as I gave it a go for the first time. Was it even working? I was disappointed until I felt the results. Smooth baby! Very pleased. I guess it just does the job more quietly and efficiently than my cheap shaver.

Here's the deal. It charges quickly and can be cleaned easily with water. This model has a row of LEDs to indicate charge (who needs digital?). The head cover is simple and comes on and off easily.

I'm very happy with it.

My father uses an electric razor, so I thought I would pick this up for him. He was very much impressed with this product and provided lots of feedback:

The new Remington Pivot & Flex electric razor, SP-390 and SP-399 is a pleasant surprise the moment one removes the razor from its packaging. The weight is certainly hefty and the razor feels ergonomic and the weight adds to that appeal. This razor weighs in at a hefty 7.9 ounces as compared to a more typical weight of say a Braun Series 1 model 5685 which is about 5.5 ounces.

A second surprise was that the razor was fully charged immediately out of packaging. In fact even though the user manual recommends charging the razor for 24 hours before using the razor, we went ahead and used the razor for three shaves because the LED state of charge indicator (SOCI) showed 100% capacity, Two of these shaves were for 5 day's of beard growth, which requires a lot of razor time, and one was for 1 day's of growth. After all of this usage the SOCI still indicated a 20% remaining capacity.

This battery capacity was very impressive and probably accounts for the slightly heavier weight of the razor. If so, then it's about time manufacturers reflected increased battery capacity in their designs. The recharge time was also very short, about 2 hours, which combined with the SOCI is another pleasant feature that takes some of the frustration out of recharging the razor.

How did the razor perform? We found that skin irritation was greatly reduced over some of the more conventional razors, and the ease of use with flex head was very efficient in following the contours of ones face and chin. When shaving short beards the razor glided effortlessly across ones face producing a very clean shave. For the longer beards the shave was also very smooth but there was some tendency to miss some of the longer hairs, which is not uncommon for longer growths.

The flex head can be disabled if one finds a need for this feature, and that is nice option in this razor design. The razor also has a 3 position pop-up trimmer and flexing coils that aid in providing an "exceptionally close and comfortable shave".

All in all we found that unique features of this Remington razor lived up to the hyperbole of the manufacturers' advertising claims.

Thanks Dad!

I've had a lot of experience with electric shavers (20+ years) using several different brands and models. Before using this Remington, I was using a Panasonic ES8109 (about $180) for about a year. Before that, I had a Braun Syncro 7540 (about $150) for several years. Before that, I used several Remington dual foils. I was always happy with my Remingtons way back then, but I was lured away by the convenience of a self-cleaning shaver. Though this one isn't self-cleaning, Remington just might have won me back.

Pros:

*A close shave! I haven't had this close of a shave in years. It really is as close as a blade.

*It's fast. I didn't think three foils would be that much faster than two, but I find myself choosing the Remington over my Panasonic morning after morning for the speed advantage alone. It really does take far fewer passes to get everything.

*Holds a long charge. Since this Remington offers a quick shave, getting 10+ days out of one charge isn't a problem.

*Can be used with the cord. This is a significant draw for me, because I tend to forget to plug my shaver in, and when I need it, I need it NOW, not after waiting for it to charge. Some shavers (such as my Panasonic) can only be used in battery mode. This is probably a safety feature so some dunce doesn't try to use it plugged in while taking a shower. The drawback to that is that if you forget to charge it, you'll have to wait. And once the batteries stop holding a charge (inevitable with all shavers), you've got nothing but a paperweight. I kept using my Braun with the cord for years after the battery conked out (buying a new shaver only when I temporarily misplaced the Braun during a trip). It's nice to know I'll have that option with this Remington.

*The head assembly pivots very effectively and smoothly.

*The trimmer, when popped up, is positioned conveniently (for my taste, anyway), adjacent to the foils. It feels very natural to use, and it works extremely well. I like my Panasonic, but I've never gotten used to the odd, almost perpendicular, placement of the trimmer.

*Can be used wet or dry, and the head can be cleaned with liquid soap and water.

Cons:

*It's big, awkwardly shaped, and a little uncomfortable in the hand. Poor ergonomics.

*It doesn't come with a travel bag.

*It gives such a close shave, it leaves my skin feeling a little irritated. I remember now that I had a problem with my old Remingtons doing this (and I never "adjusted" to that). It's not a big deal (the price of a really close shave), but it's worth mentioning.

*The foil-protector cap is a little difficult to get on and off.

Overall, this is a fine, though imperfect, shaver. If I could give it four and a half stars, I would. I have three electric shavers available for my use now, and this is by far the cheapest. Yet it's the one I'll be reaching for tomorrow morning.

13.) A fairly decent electric shaver if you have the skin for it
Reviewed by: Pen Name Fairbanks, Alaska

This is about the fifth electric shaver I've used in the past couple of years. Usually I prefer a regular razor, but I've gotten so lazy about shaving lately that I like to see some quicker options. Most of my previous shavers have been Norelco's, which use a completely different razor pattern. I'm not used to Remington Razors, but found that the blades on the F5790 gave me a much smoother shave than my Norelcos have been giving me. It almost felt as smooth as with a straight razor. The main reason I won't switch to the Remington though, is because it gave me an uncomfortable bit of razor burn a couple days later. Now I know that there is a period where your skin and face have to adjust when you start using an electric razor, but even after a solid 4 weeks of using it every day, my face was still getting burned.

As far as the razor construction goes, I liked it a lot. The weight of the unit was just right and felt good in my hands. I did have a problem with the head of the razor, which has two plastic pieces that extend above the height of the blades on either side. It wasn't a big problem, but I could feel them as I shaved and was somewhat bothered by them. There really shouldn't be anything extending past the blades on an electric razor in my opinion. Battery life was very good. I let the razor run unattended and it lasted 2 hours, 17 minutes (just turned on, not being used). I also really liked cleanup with this razor. I think it's the first razor I've had where you could clean it wet or dry, which is a big plus to me.

Overall, I normally would give it three stars, but I don't want to penalize it too much just because my skin couldn't get used to the blades. Everything else about it is great.

I must admit that I am not a fan of electric shavers. After trying many different brands and models of shavers they do not give me a close shave compared to the shaving cream and razor blades. With that said I will give my input on the Remington FS790.

For the money it is a good shaver. I would say this is a mid priced shaver and it works like such. I never had a Remington to last over a year or two and even my $175 Braun only lasted a little longer. It shaves as close as my Braun. The three foil shaving saves time because you do not have to make as many passes. I do not know how long the blades will last. I like the fact that you can rinse them it off with water. It holds a charge for about an hour. I keep mine at my office to take care of the afternoon shadow. If you are looking for decent shaver then this one is it.

15.) Reasonable Value for Price
Reviewed by: A. Helfer Pennsylvania
Rating:
I've used an F5790 Remington for a few days now and am getting a good sense for what I like and don't like about this electric razor.

First off, for years I've been using Braun electric shavers. The one I have now I've had for four or five years. It uses cleaning fluid "modules" in its recharging base to keep clean and fresh. It does a great job. When it was new, it was more than $100.

I am familiar with Remington shavers. My father had one when I was a child. It was a tank and had a long product life.

So how does this one measure up?

Pros:

1) It provides a reasonably close and comfortable shave without a lot of time or effort. It doesn't pull my whiskers -- it cuts them. It seems to have an adequate motor, and the pivoting head moves freely.
2) It cleans pretty well with water.
3) It has a universal voltage transformer, so it should be useful abroad (with proper plug adapters).
4) It feels reasonably well put together and is comfortable to hold. It also isn't too noisy.

But it's not all perfect.

Cons:

1) All of the head assembly, with the exception of the foils and cutter blades, seems to be made of plastic, including plastic with a "chrome" look that gets dirty quickly. I don't know how well it will hold up. By comparison, the Braun has much more metal in its pivoting cutter assembly.
2) The three foils that move "independently" are a bit gimmicky. At times, it feels like too big a "flat" shaving surface (i.e., three rows on the same plane) to do contoured areas on the face. If I press hard enough to make the individual "floating" foils depress, I'm pressing so hard that the shaver burns my skin. That isn't so useful.
3) There is no included case (there is a clear plastic guard for the foils). This fact coupled with the lack of any way to "lock out" the power button means that, should you travel with this, it might turn on in your luggage, leaving you with a dead battery on arrival.

I haven't been using it long enough yet to comment on battery life or recharging. I'll supplement this review down the road.

All told, the shaver delivers reasonable value for the price. It won't replace my Braun, but I wouldn't expect it to perform the same as a razor that costs twice as much. It's a good razor at its price point.

16.) Helps decrease male morning angst

Men face an existential crisis every morning when they put a razor to their throats. The Remington F5790 Foil Shaver helps decrease male morning angst.

The shaver feels solid and gives a close shave. I found it more irritating than a triple-blade safety razor or the Braun Syncro shaver I used for two years. Like all electric shavers I have used, there are areas that they just don't shave well - under the nose, the cleft of the chin, and the neck. I found this shaver no better or worse than the Braun, which is much more expensive. Cleaning was simple, although I prefer to brush it clean rather than run it under water. I worry that the water will decrease the life of the cutting block. The shaver charges quickly, and holds a charge well. The trimmer was awkward to use; it does not pop far enough up.

I probably will continue to use a blade, but will keep this electric in my office for mid-day touchups and to deal with 5 o'clock shadow. The shaver is a good value.

I've been looking for a second shaver that I could always keep in my travel bag and never have to worry again about whether or not I remembered to pack it. It didn't have to have all the bells and whistles of my everyday electric (I currently use a Panasonic Vortex), just give a decent, close shave. Enter the Remington F5790 LED Pivot & Flex Rechargeable Cord/Cordless Foil Shaver. The weight felt right, if on the lighter side, but the pivoting head admittedly looked and felt a bit flimsy. Still, after a couple of get-acquainted tries, the shaver came through where it needed to and then some (it seems to shave more closely than the Panasonic).

I like the fact that it charges quickly (with a five-minute quick charge) and can be placed under running water for easy cleaning. And the three-position pop-up trimmer locks the pivoting head in place to deal with longer hairs so they don't get snagged by the triple foils.

On this particular model, the charging indicator is fuel gauge-style, marked in 20-minute intervals, rather than a digital display. All in all, this "second" shaver makes an ideal, affordable back-up, that's compact and light enough for travelling, but still sturdy enough to get the job done.

18.) A Bit Bulky, but Nice Shaver
Reviewed by: The Web Optimist Palm Springs, CA
Rating:
The Remington F5790 electric shaver has all kinds of neat features - pivoting neck, Titanium coated foils, pop-up trimmer, cord or cordless use, battery fuel gauge and a two year warranty.

Physically, the only way I can describe this shaver is that it resembles the phaser weapon on the old Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series (maybe they should have called it the Face Phaser). It's ergonomic design makes it farily easy to hold, but, though fairly light weight, it's on the bulky side.

In addition to the shaver itself, the box contains the charging cable, manual/warranty and, well hidden in the packing, a cleaning brush. Make a note of that. The cleaning brush is stuffed in the packaging at the very bottom of the box. I almost missed it, thinking it was strange there was no cleaning brush.

In addition to the cleaning brush, the shaver can be rinsed under a faucet.

Naturally the value of any electric shaver is in the shave. The booklet that comes with the Remington F5790 states that it takes two weeks for your face to get used to a new shaver and this was definitely true for me with the F5790. The first few days the shaver was a bit rough on my face. The packaging claims a close, comfortable shave in 1/3 the time, but I didn't really notice any speed increase, though I might just be a creature of habit.

The real test for any electric shaver for me is my neck. There are grooves that most shavers just can't do justice to and the F5790 isn't perfect there, either. Though it did a better job on my neck than most shavers I have tried, I still found myself popping up the trimmer to get to a few hard to cut whiskers on my neck.

Overall, the shaving experience, after my face got used to the F5790, was very good. I would give it a 4 out of five stars. I had to knock off a star for the neck and the bulkiness of the shaver.

As a background, I use an electric shaver everyday and have gone through many electric shavers. While I would not say this is the best one that I have used, it is still a good quality shave for the value. I have Braun Series 5 shaver with cleaning kit which is a slightly better shave but I'm not sure it's worth 3X the price. I also don't like the gimmicky cleaning kits that you have to buy for $5 a piece. The pivot feature works well and helps it contour to your face. The LED is pretty standard in that it tells you the battery status. The shaver has a nice design on that it fits comfortably in your hand. The pivot/flex feature helps it contour well to your face so that it gives a smooth, effective shave with minimal skin irritation. The pop-up, three position trimmer works well too. The LED display gives battery status, while the charge lasts almost two weeks with daily use and unit recharges in about an hour and a half. The shaver is washable and you can use it wet or dry, though it works a lot better dry for me. All in all it's a pretty good value.

22.) Good performance for a reasonably priced shaver
Reviewed by: Brian Kodi
Rating:
First, let me state that I've used electric shavers for over 20 years, and I'm a loyal Braun customer and have used them exclusively during this time. The current shaver I've been using since August, 2008 (16 months and counting) is a Braun Series 5 (8983) at a price of $124.09 on Amazon as of November 28th, 2009. So my comments on the Remington F5790 are not entirely fair, despite my best attempts at factoring out the psychological bias from the comparison of these two shavers.

The first time I tested the Remington, I had a few days of heavy-growth from the Thanksgiving weekend, which was by no means an easy task for any shaver to handle comfortably. The Remington doesn't pick up as much hair as my Braun on each stroke, but this deficiency is not sufficient enough to dock the performance of the Remington. The shave was as smooth as a baby's buttocks, and I was 100% satisfied. I didn't experience any tugging on overgrown hair, which I sometimes do with the Braun. The noise level, however, was much louder than my Braun shaver's, and it's especially uncomfortable when I'm shaving around the sideburn area. This particular disadvantage I couldn't look past. However, if you're not used to more silent shavers like I am, you may not consider this a nuisance. Beauty is in the eyes of the beerholder.

The second time I shaved using the Remington was the next shave with only a couple of days of growth, which is my normal run rate. Once again, 100% satisfied with the smoothness of the shave, but this time I experienced an uncomfortable skin irritation that I soon forgot about as I entered an ethnic supermarket with narrow isles and constantly maneuvered to get out of the way of moving shopping carts. I suspect the new shaver feels excessively rough on my face and neck because I'm not used to it. I bet if I'd used cologne after the shave, I would've screamed like a banshee.

Had it not been for the ability to obtain and test for free the Remington shaver through Amazon's Vine program, I doubt I'd ever try any brand other than Braun. This experience hasn't changed my mind about my brand loyalty either, but if you're looking for a good shave at a very reasonable price, this Remington F5790 is excellent for the task. Oh, and the trimmer on the Remington ourperformed the more expensive Braun's.

I've had many electric razors: Panasonic, Norelco, Braun but I have never owned a Remington. I was never impressed by what I've seen from them. I did consider buying one to put in my car if I didn't have time to shave at home but didn't.
This shaver seems like it is copying the Braun in design. It has the 3 floating heads and the pivoting face like the high end Braun's have. The problem it it doesn't have the quality and smoothness to it like the Braun shaver. It shaves decently for the price but it lacks the balance of the higher end shavers, it feels kind of clunky. It has a charging meter which you don't see on many lower priced shavers.
I have trouble trying to rate this because I'm so use to using much more expensive shavers and I find myself comparing this one to them. This one is considerably less expensive than the shavers I have owned. For the price I think Remington did a really good job but for twenty dollars more you could buy a Braun 370. So if you want to stay around fifty bucks this is the one to go with.

24.) Great razor for the price

Rating:
I got this razor as a gift; I currently own and use regularly a Braun 7680. Now that I've tried both, I thought others would like to know how the $55 Remington stacks up against my $140 Braun.

The Braun is a double-headed razor with a trim cutter (they call it a power comb) between the heads to pick up long hairs as you shave. This is great for someone like me who shaves every two to five days. However, the Remington has three heads without a trimmer between the heads. When I finish shaving (after two days) there is a patch of hair that the heads won't catch. Sliding up the pop-up trimmer allows me to shorten those hairs to where I can mow them down the rest of the way with the triple heads. Other than those few long hairs that require two steps with the Remington, both razors provide a close, smooth shave.

The Braun comes with a special cleaning unit that requires a Braun cleaning cartridge that oils the head as it cleans, but it must be replaced periodically. The Remington requires water. Advantage Remington!

The Braun comes with an LCD display that can be read at any time. It shows current charge levels in minutes remaining. The Remington comes with an LED charge indicator that shows percent of charge in 20% blocks, but it can only be read when the razor is turned on. Both methods are fine. The Remington came in the box fully charged (more fun on Christmas morning when it can be tried out right away), and the included charger has a coiled cord to shave while plugged in (for those days you forgot to charge it up).

The Remington is lighter yet larger than the Braun. I don't care for the look and feel of the Remington; it appears to me to be cheaply made with black plastic and chrome. But it also costs $85 less than the Braun system. When shaving, I like the Remington's light weight and the large handle every bit as much as the smaller, denser Braun.

The Remington comes with a generous two-year warranty. Battery life is unknown to me at this point, but when they go bad, the instructions state that the batteries are removed by cutting the wires. Most people would not consider that to be a user-replaceable item; but if the razor lasts 2 years, with only one blade/head replacement, you have saved a ton of money over disposable razors and could justify buying a whole new electric.

Bottom line, I prefer the efficiency of a cutter between two heads over a triple-header without a cutter in between. But not everyone wants to spend $140 on a razor and the Remington does a fine job, especially for only $55. For a good razor that costs less than a year's supply of cartridge razors and shave cream, I recommend this Rem F5790.

CONSTRUCTION

The design is comprised of a solid black matte finish with chrome plastic highlights. The power level is lit at 20% intervals. A pop-up trimmer and an on-off switch are the only settings. Removal of the foil and blades is quite easy. The head swivels while the blades float up and down. To facilitate potecting the blade a foil cover snaps onto the head.

USE

I have sensitive skin and the razor is comfortable. The noise is about average for a shaver in this price range. This shaver's ability to shave is very capable but it took several passes to shave on my neck and under my chin. One small design flaw is that the screen is slightly recessed in the shaver head with the edges of the frame placing pressure against the skin.

Recharge time is 2 hours but the shaver I received was fully charged. A 2 hour recharge time is above average for standard shavers.

Maintenance of the blades is easy since they are washable under running water and using the accompanying cleaning brush.

This is a No Frills shaver that is more than capable for daily use or for travel. The quick recharge time is a plus. However, there is a small design flaw that may be uncomfortable for some users.

I have a Bruan and a Panasonic that give a closer and more comfortable shave. But the Braun costs 5 times as much and the Panosonic that costs 6 times as much. So, let's be realistic - the Remington isn't going to be on par with the high-end shavers that cost considerably more.

The bottom line: There are shavers out there that outperformm the Remington in terms of comfort and the closeness of the shave but you're going to have to shell out major dough for these. The Remington provides reasonably satisfactory results without breaking the bank. For the price, I'd say the Remington isn't a bad deal.

Pros
----
- Reasonably close shave

- Trimmer
The trimmer works as well as a dedicated trimmer.

Cons
----
- Requires more passes to shave an area
It misses some areas, so you may need a few passes over these areas.

- Noisy

- Troublesome Cleaning
To clean the shaver, you have to remove the foil, empty out the hairpocket, and rinse the cutter assembly under running water. (On my Bruan and Panasonic, I simply have to rinse the shaver without having to remove the foil.)

---
A top of the line shaver the Remington F5790 is not, but it provides a reasonably close shave. If you're on a tight budget, the Remington F5790 might be the way to go.

27.) Just a hair beneath the competition--Not too shabby for an electric razor
Reviewed by: jojoleb Pittsburgh, PA United States
Rating:
The Remington F-5790 is a standard electric shaver that seems to do the job well enough. It has some interesting features, but in the end is not all that different from the rest of the pack. That being said it is a worthy competitor for Braun, Panasonic, Norelco, and Wahl and is a reasonable model for those of us who prefer and electric razor.

PROS:
Shave comparable to other, higher priced electric razors
Nice price point for an electric shaver
Close shave for an electric razor
Quick 5 minute charge capability
Able to rinse clean

CONS:
Not as sturdily built as other models
Loud compared to Panasonics and Brauns
Clippers are flush to the shaving head
NiCad batteries that take a long time to charge
No charging stand or automatic cleaning system available

LONG REVIEW:
Before I review this shaver let me give a simple caveat: I have never met an electric razor that can give as close a shave as a conventional razor. Those of us who prefer electric razors use them because there is less preparation involved, perhaps to save time, and also to cut down on skin irritation. If you have never used an electric razor, you will most likely be disappointed by the simple fact that you can't get the same kind of clean and close shave that you can get with a regular razor.

The ability of the electric razor to give you a close shave is partially dependent on the model. I have never been able to get a good shave with a rotary razor, and so I prefer the foil type with the vibrating blades. Some men have greater success with the rotating, Norelco-type razor. Closeness of the shave is also dependent on your beard-hair type: men with curlier or more downy beard hairs may fare less well with an electric razor. Longer hair--say three or four days growth--is usually too long and bends flat when you run the shaver over it. This means that the hair won't get through the holes and no cutting will take place. (In this case, you need to cut the hair first with the clippers and go over the area with the electric shaver once the hairs are cut down to size.)

That being said, electric razors generally work efficiently and can net you a competent shave in five minutes or less. You don't need shaving cream, you don't need to concentrate, and the cleanup is a little less involved. So there is a convenience factor here. The likelihood of injury is quite low and the cleanup is generally trivial.

The technology is pretty similar for every electric shaver, whether it is rotary or foil cutting. You have a blade that either vibrates or rotates underneath a protective grid or foil. Hairs penetrate the holes and are cut by the vibrating or rotating blade. The closeness of the shave is determined by the thickness of the foil and the ability of the hairs to get through the holes of the foil.

No matter how you slice it, however, the electric razor's blades can never get as close to your skin as the blades of a regular razor because the foil intervenes. Some shavers try to have sharp edges around the foil holes so that the foil itself has some cutting action as you move the shaver across the face. This has an advantage of getting some stubborn hairs that don't quite make it to the blades but has the disadvantage of increasing irritation.

THE SHAVER ITSELF
The F-5790 appears to be in Remington's latest electric shaver lineup. Of this line up only the F-4790 and F-5790 appear to be available in the United States. I found the F-7790 on Amazon U.K. The F-6790 appears to be elusive, and may not yet have been released. All the shavers appear to sport a similar ergonomic design. The F-4790 does not have a charge meter and sports only two vibrating, cutter assemblies. The F-7790 appears identical to the F-5790, but has a digital charge indicator that reads out the exact percentage of charge as opposed to the line of LEDs found in the F-5790. The F-7790 also appears to have a nifty charging stand.

The shaver is somewhat larger than my Braun 7600 Syncro series shaver (see Braun 7680 Syncro Pro Solo Shaver Refurbished for a similar shaver still being sold) and a reasonably ergonomic shape. The shaver does, however, feel somewhat light in the hand. It is larger than the Braun and a little clunky. It has a light plastic, cheap quality air about it making me concerned that it wouldn't hold up to as much abuse as I have put upon the Braun over the past few years. It also is considerably louder than the Braun (but not nearly as loud as my last Wahl shaver).

The on-off switch is a simple, plastic button found in the center of the handle and also has a flimsy feel to it. The head assembly is also almost completely made out of plastic, whereas it is mostly metal in the Braun model. The assembly sports three foils and blade assemblies, as opposed to two on the Braun. Remington seems to believe that more is better and that one can get a better shave with three blade assemblies.

The head tilts (or pivots and flexes in Remington's language) in order to accommodate the curvature of your face. The clipper resides on the far side of the shaver and is advanced using a three position switch. At the lowest position, the clipper is off. At mid position, the clipper is not activated but keeps the head assembly in a fixed position when you want to shave without flexing and pivoting. At the final position, the clipper is activated, but is still flush with the shaver head. (On the Braun it extends slightly beyond the shaver head).

The foil can be removed easily, and the blades can then be whisked with the supplied brush for cleaning after each shave. Once a week, the company recommends rinsing in water and allowing the shaver to dry overnight. It should be noted that although the head assembly can come in contact with water, the rest of the shaver cannot. You need to take special care not to get the rest of the shaver wet while doing this (and one would be well advised to clean the shaver when it is off and not plugged in). The blade assemblies pop off easily enough when they need to be replaced. Each assembly is a unit of its own (so in theory they could be replaced separately).

CHARGING
Batteries are at a premium in an electric shaver. The life of the battery impacts on the long term usefulness of the shaver. The battery not only stores charge but intercedes between the AC power source and the motor. That means that if the battery is truly dead, your shaver will not work. Ostensibly to keep costs down, Remington uses standard NiCad technology. This means that the batteries have 'memory' and that the first charge should be for 24 hours and recharging requires long recharge cycles. It also means that you need to run down the batteries every six months and recharge for 24 hours to ensure a long battery life. This is not optimal in the age of NiMH and Lithium batteries.

The charge indicator seems to accurately record the length of charge. Although the company promises 60 minutes of shaving, I got a little more than 40 minutes after the first 24 hour charge before the thing ran down. (Note, the actual run time may be longer if you are shaving for five or ten minutes at a time rather than continuously until the device runs out of juice.) The five minute quick charged worked well for a quick shave, but I'd recommend leaving it plugged in if you ran out of a charge and need to shave on the fly.

The cord connects directly to the shaver on the F-5790 and there is no charging base. The charger works on worldwide voltage types, so all you would need would be a charge adapter if you travel with this shaver to Europe.

HOW CLOSE IS IT?
About as close as the Braun. After treating the old Braun to a new foil and blade assembly, the two shaves compared favorably. As with any electric razor, the first time you use one your skin may feel somewhat irritated, but this goes away over time. The Remington did not take any longer or any shorter of a time to exact a shave.

The shave head on the Remington has three blade assemblies and is also wider than the Braun. This allows you to cover more real estate more quickly, but gives you less maneuverability. The compromise didn't seem to make much of a difference. (Does a triple-blade, non-electric razor really shave less well than a dual-blade model?) The pivoting is similar to that of the Braun and does make shaving easier. The holes on the Remington, however, are slightly larger. This means that getting those slightly longer, more recalcitrant hairs clipped is a little easier. That being said, it also means that the Remington is a little harsher on the skin than the Braun. Titanium or no titanium didn't seem to make a difference.

When it comes to the clippers, both worked effectively. Clippers are important for shaving sideburns and getting rid of longer or curlier hairs that don't fit through the foil holes and thus aren't cut easily by the head assembly. The Remington had the disadvantage of the clipper tops being flush to the head assembly. This makes it somewhat more awkward to see exactly where you were shaving, but even so the clippers worked competently.

CLEANING
Popping off the foil was easy and supplied simple whisk does the trick. Rinsing under water was also easy and effective. Drying times, however, even in the winter with the dry radiator heat and the foil removed, take longer than 24 hours, so you need to have enough downtime (perhaps on a weekend) for the blades to dry thoroughly.

Note, however, that my Braun came with a charger stand that also serves as a washing system. You have to buy replacement cartridges to wash the shaver, but I really like the fact that the shaver is cleaned and sterilized by an alcohol based solution between shaves. The alcohol based solution dries within hours with the foil on and it saves a sometimes messy cleanup, the process is automated, and it cuts down on time as I don't have to manually clean the shaver. Remington has offered a similar system for their shavers in the past but does not appear to offer such a cleaning system with this series.

REPLACEMENT FOILS
As of this writing the replacement foil and cutter assembly for the Braun is about $30(you can check the present price here: Braun 7000-Series Syncro Shaver Replacement Foil & Cutter Set). I could not find the price of the Remington on Amazon or at the Remington site, but similar Remington products offer a marginally better replacement cost at around $20 (see this, for example: Remington SP-69 MS2 Foil Screen & Cutter Blade Head). This is something to check in the future as these parts should be replaced every six months or so.

CONCLUSION
On the whole, this shaver performs as well as any other I have used in its class. It has a slightly cheaper price point than the Brauns or Panasonics, but appears to be a little less robust in terms of the construction. Please note that my Braun has lasted more than three years. All I have had to do was change the foils and blades. The batteries have also held up over time. I am not so sure that the Remington will be able to do this.

Moreover, Remington used to have all their shavers manufactured in the United States. The only company that appears to still do this is Wahl. Somewhat disappointingly, this shaver was manufactured in China.

This shaver is a reasonable choice for someone looking for an electric razor at a reasonable price point. It is relatively simple to use and the results are comparable to other shavers that I have used in the past.

I generally am unimpressed with electric shavers, but I keep one by the computer for those ultra-lazy moments. (This is not a wet/dry model, so you cant take it in the shower).

Surprisingly, this moderately priced shaver gave me the closest "powered" shave I've ever had. i'm not sure whats made the difference, but it gives a very close shave in just a few passes. Its rather large as shavers go, but I like the feel of it, and the way the head easily swivels as it meets the contours of the face.

The trimmer works well. It seems to hold a charge well, though I havent tested it, or compared it with others. (It can be used cordlessly, or attached to an outlet).

Bottom line, a very good product, especially for its price.

29.) Good product at very good price
Reviewed by: Todd Stockslager Raleigh, NC
Rating:
Like many of the other reviewers I am coming to the Remington F5790 from the Braun family of razors (8595 for me), and at about half the price of the Bruan system it provides a very good shave. I would say based on my subjective hand over the chin test after shaving, and the 5 o'clock-shadow glance in the mirror test, the Remington actually gives a slightly better shave than my Braun with about nine months on its blades and foil. The razor is big but nicely shaped so it grips and shaves easily. The 5-segment LED meter shows the battery life remaining before it needs recharged, and appears to be accurate enough to trust it for deciding if you need to take the charger along on a weekend trip, for example.

A couple of things that might be concerns for this razor:

1. The head of this razor is very wide, so getting into tight spaces like around the nose or around chins with steep clefts like mine can be difficult.
2. The head swivels but unlike the Braun does not have a lock position, which I use on the Braun in those tight spots. I find myself trying to hold the head still with one finger while gripping the razor with my thumb and other fingers.
3. While the shave is close and clean now, I wonder if it will stay that way without an automatic daily cleaner like the Braun system. Sure, the Remington comes with a nice cleaning brush, and it can be rinsed under the faucet. But I've used electric razors for probably 20 years, and I can tell you that the best of intentions to take the 2-3 minutes necessary daily to clean the razor sometimes are forgotten, and then a month later after face-scraping bad shaves I take off the foil and find blades and foil choked with old clippings. There's a reason I broke down and paid for the more-expensive Bruan shaving and cleaning system.

But at the price, this razor gives a good shave and would be a good investment for someone who is new to electric razors and isn't sure they are ready to make the larger investment the Braun system requires.

30.) Size Matters/Good Value
Reviewed by: Michael Strom Chicago, IL USA

For those ordering this product on line, you should note the F5790 is large for a cordless shaver. The size, as advertised, will give you a quicker shave. It has the largest overall cutting surface I've personally had. Part of the tradeoff there is the need for a larger motor, larger battery and larger overall body. Even the plug on the recharging cord is unusually large -- perhaps due to the feature adapting automatically for variable overseas voltages. If convenience for travel is a significant factor, it does take up quite a bit of room in a travel bag, especially given the curved shaver body configuration. Veteran travelers may already have a smaller shaver dedicated for travel use -- you may not want to take this one for an overnight trip.

For regular home use, the F5790 has a lot going for it. The 3 pivoting cutters operate very smoothly and overall it gave me a good, comfortable shave. Everyone's face and beard is different but, for what it's worth, this one does a better and quicker job than the Brauns I've been using. The pop-up trimmer is positioned better than most.

Hands down, the factor I most appreciate is the indicator light that operates like a fuel gauge (0% - 100% charged) so you know when you need to recharge without running out of power mid-shave. Battery life between charges seems fine (it's new, so we'll see how that holds up over time). Unlike, for example, my cell phone, the F5790 doesn't suddenly drain faster when the "fuel gauge" is running low. You should have plenty of time to recharge as needed.

I don't agree with Remington's description of the shaver contour as ergonomic -- it seemed a bit awkward at first but it's fine once you get the hang of it.

Overall, this is a really good value for the price (currently listing at $55), and will outperform shavers at twice the price.

31.) electic razor with useful charge indicator
Reviewed by: gearhead4 Woodridge IL

The Remington F5790 does an adequate job of removing a day of beard growth. The triple foil head design does reduce the number of strokes needed to find each whisker, but the bigger head makes the reach into corners (such as under your nose) more difficult. It also makes the razor more bulky (it takes up more space in your suitcase).
I like the multi LED charge indicator that lets you know in advance when to schedule a recharge. For travel, this means you may not need to pack the power cord.

32.) Nice, close shave!
Reviewed by: B. Colonna Somewhere in NJ

Typically I use Norelco rotary shavers. I also have a Panasonic ES4026NC Pro Curve shaver. The later is similar in configuration (foil, etc.) to the Remington.

The Remington F5790 is a good shaver which provides a close, smooth shave. It is not the best shaver in the world, but performs comparably to other shavers in its price class and alongside many more expensive razors.

What's in the box?
* Shaver
* Charger
* Protective shield
* Instruction manual

I've owned the shaver for a couple of weeks now. It provides a close shave leaving my skin smooth. The initial charge takes a few hours. While the shaver charges in a few hours, Remington suggests 24 hours as the first charge. After that, it holds a charge well, lasting several hours/shaves between charges. The display indicating the percentage of the battery charge left is a nice feature, as you can see if you are at 80% charge, 20% etc., rather than just getting surprised when the battery goes dead.

PROs:
* Smooth shave in both dry and wet applications.
* Simple to clean, and can be easily rinsed as well.
* "fuel gauge' displays approximate battery charge remaining.
* AC adapter makes shaver easy to use while charging.

CONs:
* No carrying case.

Overall, I like this shaver. I do feel Remington skimped by providing a cheap, plastic shield which snaps over the foil head rather than a carrying case. I don't think I've ever bought an electric razor before which did not include a case. The razor is decently priced and performs well. I think the inclusion of a case would complete this product.

33.) A decent multifoil shaver.

My wallet smarts whenever it gets near one of those 300 dollar shavers. They cost so much that they call them shaving systems, which reminds me of the vacuum cleaner man calling his canister vac a "cleaning system" not a vacuum cleaner. If they call it a "system" it means you have to pay more money. For my money this is a great little shaver. I have two others, one I reviewed for the Vine. This one has the advantage of more floating heads to get more surface area. It shaves faster than the other two single foils, and that's due mostly to the heads. I can't detect the subtle claims of smoothness in these foil shavers, to me they are mostly the same in feel. They also all do a lousy job when the beard gets more than a few days old, you need to use a blade then they will pull your beard and take forever to shave it otherwise.

That said I alternate blade and electric all the time, and this is a pretty good one. It even has a lot of the features found on those 300 dollar shaving systems. Fuel gauge, auto detect overseas power, quick charge and others. This one however while it charges fast, when peaked it lasts less long that my two single foil shavers. I think the power usage is up with the multifoils. I sometimes shave on the go and it's gone dead on me in the car a few times. Still it seems better to me than the average review it's gotten to this point. Maybe they really wanted one of those 300 buck systems and this was a poor sub?

In this review I compare this Remington razor to the Braun Series 5. If you were hoping that this review would say this razor is just as good as the much more expensive Braun, you'll be disappointed. It does work pretty well though. I find it shaves fairly close without irritation.

Here is the comparison razor Braun Series 5 (8995) Men's Shaver

The Braun does get more hairs with the first swipe and is a little less irritating to my skin.

The Braun looks "more cool", has more flashy features, and is built with more solid materials. It feels heavier in a good way.

The Remington seems to lose charge over time, even if unused. Maybe I got a refurbished unit or something. I can take the Braun on a nearly week long trip without having to charge it up.

I like the Remington's sideburn trimmer slightly better, though it took me a time or two to get accustomed to it because it's a little hard to tell where the blade is going to hit. This is hard to explain, but the razor body blocks your view a little.

I really like the Braun clean and renew system though it can get pricey buying all the refills.

I like the Braun better. But, if you don't want to shell out $100+, the Remington is a good choice.

This shaver came to me through the Amazon Vine program. Because it is a men's shaver, I gave it to my brother to use. He graciously agreed to shave off his beard and test this product. Before we start, here are two important points:

1. My brother is 60 years old, has had rosacea and acne problems his entire life. His skin is hyper sensitive.
2. Some comparisons will be made to his current shaver, a Braun SmartControl3 4775, which was comparable in price to the Remington. He began using the Remington on November 27 and has used it every day since then.

The four-star rating is my brother's, based upon these factors:

1. The shaver does not irritate his sensitive skin;
2. It does give a close shave without using much pressure, and it works better than his Braun;
3. The swivel head really does conform to your face;
4. There are three trimmers, while his Braun only has two; however, he feels that the trimmers only work for sideburns and are insufficient for a beard;
5. The razor is easy to clean under the tap and needs to be done only once a week;
6. If he needed to buy a shaver, he would buy this one;
7. A star was lost because you must use this shaver every day for it to work as advertised. If you don't, then the shaver does not do a good job cutting longer hairs; and
8. Other minor quirks that he didn't like are that the snap on screen over the cutting head, as well as the plug going into the razor, only attach one way. On his Braun, these connections work both ways.

37.) Great value foil shaver

Disclaimer: I received this product to review for free. I'm comparing it against some $220-$300 Braun and Panasonic shavers I have used.

For the ~$50 price (1/4 to 1/6 the price of some of the high-end shavers) I still give this shaver 4 stars.

In comparison, it feels more ergonomic in your hands than a pricey Panasonic, but *feels* cheap and plastic-y in quality of material.

As far as the shave goes, it's a great, close shave, but it probably takes twice as long for shaving as the Bruan or Panasonic, but for a 1/4 of the price, I say this is a great value! Ie. Would I say the Braun or Panasonic shave 4x or 5x better, no, I can't say that.

Immediately, I think the reason it takes twice as long to do the same amount of shaving (and a reason for the price) is because the motor doesn't feel as powerful as the Braun or Panasonic - but that's okay when you come back to the price.

The 4 position trimmer, as advertised, really only sticks in the last position and is only effective in the last position, but hey it works fine for side burns.

It doesn't come with a travel case, but I like the fact it features corded or uncorded shaving and a 5 minute quick charge.

The battery life is near 2 weeks and this shaver features a nice LED battery readout - but don't think the LED means anything fancy, it just shows how much charge is left, a bit overstated in the Amazon title.

The pivoting head has a good range of motion and conforms to your neck and jawline well.

In summary, this is a great value and comparable to some of the most expensive shavers out there at 1/4-1/6 the price.

This has to be one of the largest electric razors I have ever purchased. Possibly the largest I have ever seen, including all the electric razors (about 20 ) that we threw out after my grandfather passed away.

This has 3 foils ,which is the main reason I wanted it. I've had other remingtons with 3 foils and good results. 2 foils-just don't cut it.

I tossed a $200 braun (2 foil) that was self cleaning and lots of bells and whistles but couldn't give me a clean shave.

This razor gives me a clean shave mostly. Its so big, that above my chin and below my lower lip, its tricky to get in the curve and cut close.

This thing is fast. Probably the fastest razor I've ever owned when it comes to shaving (yes it has a quick charge as well,b ut I don't care much about that).

It is rinseable, but that seems to be less effective than just cleaning the cut beard with the included brush - or better yet a can of air or if you are going for the Home Improvement over kill award, maybe an air compressor with a basketball needle. :)

If you want to travel with this, be warned that you might be charged for an extra bag (to hold the razor) but at least when you shave in your hotel it will only take you a minute or two to get the job done and be on your way.

My experience with this shaver has been, for lack of a better word, inconsistent. As a result, I have waited about 5 weeks to post a review. When I first got the Remington F5790, I was quite impressed with its performance--even though its size and weight were somewhat more than I was used to. It quickly gave me a very close and clean shave. As I continued to use, it started to occasionally burn my skin so I decided I'd just try to be more careful. However, it was not long before the shaver started leaving nicks... It has now been my decision to go back to my previous shaver, Braun. Admittedly, shaving takes longer in the morning but at least I'm not running out the door with torn Kleenex corners stuck to my face.... I've seen numerous reviewers state that the shave is just not close enough for them. The only thing I can figure is that their beards must be quite a bit heavier than mine.

Discussions about shaving tend to become heated, like arguments about politics or religion. I think this is because faces are so individualistic that there's no possible way to objectively measure "closeness," "comfort," or any of the other important considerations. There's only an individual impression. So, here's mine:

I think this Remington is a pretty good value for the price. I personally got reasonably close shaves with minimal effort and almost no irritation. As is the case with all electric razors, preparation is critical. Your face has to be dry because moisture will swell the beard hairs so they won't fit into the holes in the shaving head.

The downside for me was the quality of the razor as a machine. The ergonomic design was excellent; it's very easy to hold the razor in a comfortable position. However, it seemed to clatter and buzz much more than my Braun does. It almost had a weed-whacker quality to it.

In addition, there is no carrying case of any kind. If you're going to pack it for travel, all you have to protect the shaving head is a little clip-on plastic cap-- which will pop off with just a touch.

From a price-versus-value point of view, I think this is a pretty good razor. From an absolute quality point of view, it's not. I don't intend to switch from my Braun to this Remington, because my Braun seems to be a much better razor. Of course, it cost nearly three times as much is the Remington does. In some cases, you really do get what you pay for, and for me, this is one of those cases.

43.) It's Okay For The Price.

If you're looking for that ever elusive electric razor that shaves just as close as blades, you can just stop your search. It doesn't exist. No matter how thin the foil screen is, it still has a thickness -- and that thickness determines how far away the cutting blades come to your face. Blades touching the skin will always be closer than blades sitting one layer away from the skin. So it's really unfair to try to rate this shaver as it compares to blades.

This seems like a perfectly decent shaver within its price point. The most noticeable feature to me was the fact that the razor could be used while it is plugged in.

I also have the excellent (and significantly more expensive) Panasonic ES8243A Arc IV Nano Men's Wet/Dry Rechargeable Shaver, and in most cases the Panasonic wins hands down. Of course, this is to be expected because of the price. The Remington is larger, less comfortable to hold, not as attractive, and doesn't have the wet shave capability of the Panasonic. The Remington's motor is much louder, and the shave isn't as close. It also takes many more passes to get a complete shave.

The attached trimmer is quite strange. It advertises a "3-position" trimmer, which includes off, a position in the middle, and a position that extends to be about flush with the razor head. I'm not sure what anyone would ever use that middle position for, and even fully extended it sits so close to the razor head that it feels awkward. Although I admit that I probably only feel that way after becoming accustomed to the Panasonic trimmer, which swings out and away from the body of the shaver.

In the end, this razor will probably end up as an emergency razor, either in my car or maybe in my desk at work. But it won't be replacing the Panasonic any time soon.

I've always used razors because I could never see how an electric could give as close a shave. I decided to give this a fair shot and try it since the price was right.

My first impressions on this shaver is that it is HUGE! It is 6 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide. This was definitely not what I expected (size wise) as I see much smaller electric razors in the stores. I was also disappointed that there was no stand for this but after reading other reviews can see how this missing item could be a blessing if and when the battery dies permanently since you can also use this plugged in. It does fit in my hand well as the grip is right. I also like the fact it has LEDs showing how much power is left. I charged this once so far and have used this for several weeks and it is still near full power and has not been recharged since the initial 24 hour charge.

I tried using this after a shower, dry shave, and wet shave all with the same results. It takes me significantly longer to shave with this (up to 10 times longer) than with a razor and I cannot get a clean shave like with a razor. If I pull the skin tight and press the shaver hard it gets some areas almost as clean as a razor but cannot give me a clean shave all over. I still feel stubble and when I use a razor after using this I can see there is still a fair amount that the electric cannot reach.

For those that like electric razors and are used to the stubble feel and claim this is as close as a blade may like this but I find it takes up too much of my time to use it to get it anywhere near as close a shave as I like. I may use this on occasion, in the future, when I don't shave for a few days and don't have to go to work but this will never replace or even get the same amount of use as my razor blade. The trimmer works OK but also requires a few passes before it cleans up nicely.

Because I have never owned an electric razor I cannot provide a comparison on whether the 3 heads are better than 2. I can't picture how much difference it would make considering how long it took me to get a somewhat close shave using this. I can say that had I seen how large this shaver was I wouldn't have gotten it. I can also say that it hasn't irritated my skin nor have I had discomfort with the edges like another reviewer mentioned.

I'll be sticking with my razor. I rated it a 3 because it is easy to clean and works as stated but because it can't give as close a shave as I like and is HUGE that 3 is stretching a bit.

For those of you using razors stick with them and don't waste your money.

The Remington F5790 is a largely adequate razor. It feels fairly solid and is a little larger than most of the electric razors that I've tried. As for the shave, while I've definitely used worse, I have the same problem with this razor that I've had with every other electric I've used before: it just doesn't seem to cut the hair close enough to my face. Sometimes I'll rub my face and feel so much still there that I'll have to go back over with a regular blade razor, which kind of defeats the purpose of having the electric one to begin with. Electric razors are supposed to be more convenient, faster, etc. but I have to go over my face so many times that this actually takes longer than shaving with my trusty Gilette Trac II.

As it is, the only time I'll probably ever use this is when I'm traveling or if I'm strapped for time and have to be running around while shaving. If you don't have a thick beard this would probably be more than adequate, but if you're like me and have a thicker, faster-growing beard, the search for an electric razor that will really do the job is still on...and probably always will be.

The F5790 is a decent razor, but I can still get a better shave out of a $7 wet razor in roughly the same time.

I've been using a Braun 8975 shaver for the past couple of years and have been very happy with it. I got this Remington shaver as a second shaver for use at the gym. The Remington is an "OK" shaver, but it's not the same quality as the Braun. Here are good and not-so-good points from my perspective:

+ Provides a decent shave; has a nice quick-charge feature; works around the world (the power supply can handle 110-240V); has a floating head that follows the contours of your face

- Does not feel as solidly made as the Braun (e.g., the floating head does not track as smoothly); does not have the "long hair" center cutter like the Braun (which means the Remington doesn't do a good job with longer whiskers if you've skipped shaving for a couple of days); is quite large with a bulky shape (which means it doesn't pack as well for traveling)

Overall, the quality of the Braun is noticably better than that of the Remington, both in terms of overall "feel" and in terms of specific features. My personal conclusion: The more expensive Braun is well worth it for every day shaving, but the Remington provides adequate quality for use as a second shaver (e.g., for the gym or office).

Pros:
*Descent shave. If a "10" shaver provides a silky smooth face and a "4" shaver just manages to cut everything with some effort (and leaves you with an occasional razor burn or bump), this is a 5-6 shaver.
*Price. Shavers can cost crazy money but this one doesn't.
*Charge indicator looks good and works well.
*The razor works plugged in or cordless.

Cons:
*Build quality feels and looks cheap. For instance, the shaving head tilts back and forth rather loosely and on plastic rollers; the plastic cap to cover and protect the foil fits too tight and is a bear to get on; and, even though the razor feels and looks easy to break it doesn't come with a case or even a soft bag to protect it.
*The directions: Rinse with cold/warm water, "do not use hot water"; and "do not press hard against the skin in order to avoid damage to the foil heads" make me worried it is easy to damage this unit.

I see better rated and better built razors on sale for a similar price so I'm rating this one a "3" for now. If it surprises me and lasts a year or more while still providing a good shave, it may deserve 3.5 - 4 stars.

By way of background, I have a very tough beard, and have a hard time getting a good shave even with a blade (or many blades, as modern razors run). But the allure of the electric shaver is always out there, and I do turn to one when I just don't want to deal with scraping my face over and over with a sharp piece of metal.

Over the years I've found the best electric shavers to be the higher-end Panasonics. They come in a plethora of model numbers and styles, but share the same cutting head, and perform similarly.

The first thing I noted about the Remington was that the head pivots (in the direction perpendicular to the length of the cutting head, that is to say the direction of its smaller dimension), and cannot be locked. This approach can be an issue for shaving up to a mustache and sideburns, and can limit the force applied to hold the shaver against the skin. But the Remington head is rigid and hefty enough that this did not turn out to be a problem.

When I turned it on it was quite loud, at least compared to the two Panasonics I have. While this suggested power, it was not evident in its cutting ability. With some effort I got a shave almost as good as a Panasonic would deliver, but with more pulling of the skin and an overall less pleasant experience. For someone with a light beard it might do the trick, but I recommend a good Panasonic as a better choice.

Looking at the wide stance of the body and the size of the head, it occurred to me that it might appeal to the kind of guy who likes muscle cars with big tires. So long as his beard doesn't require efficacy over aesthetics.

First off, I must state that I am a razor kind of guy. Not that I love having to wash my face, then use shaving cream, then shave it all off, then wash my face again, but it's the only way I can get a good shave. Over the years I've tried various electric razors, hoping to shortcut that process, and all of them have ended up collecting dust in the drawer.

So first, the good news... this is the best electric I've used so far. The Remington F5790 does a fairly decent job. It cuts fairly close to the skin, although I end up having to go over the same spot quite a few times, but still, it is a slightly faster process, so that's good.

Now the bad news... it still isn't as close a shave as with my multi-blade razor. And by the end of the day, I am more aware of stubble on my face again.

That's why I'm giving it three stars. Good, but not great. But when I'm in a hurry, at least I know I have something that would be adequate.

I used to be an electric razor user for years, having used models from Norelco, Panasonic, and Braun, but never any of the "high end" models from any of them. This particular razor is definitely priced at the "budget" end of the scale, and for the money, packs some impressive features.

Things I like about the Remington F5790 LED:
-LED status lights keep you informed about battery life and charging status
-Quick to charge
-Easy to disassemble and clean - can use water to clean the head.
-"Aggressive" trimmer, able to trim neckline, around ears, etc. in addition to beard trimming
-Solidly constructed
-Shape feels good in my wide hands - location of button and bear trimmer slide are intuitive and feel "solid"
-Pivoting, flexible head allows you to "push" the shaver into your face for a closer shave

However, despite these nice features, the F5790 just doesn't quite live up to my standards for something I want to use every day; it simply doesn't shave close enough after the first pass or two. To be fair, I have spent the last 5 years shaving with a "Mach 5" razor along with high-quality shaving soap and badger bristle brush, so I have gotten "spoiled" with a very close shave. I switched to this razor completely, and used it for about three weeks (the mfgr's recommendation when switching to an electric). But after three weeks of consistent use, I find that it takes longer and is more trouble than just shaving with a razor. Here's why:

-If you don't shave every day (or have rapid beard growth) the F5790 cannot handle stubble very well at all. In fact, if I skip a day or two on the weekend, I have to run the beard trimmer all over my face to "cut down" the stubble before the razor will do much. It seems that if the stubble is 1mm or longer, it just won't "suck" into the screen on the shaver very well (unlike a Norelco, for example). The result is that you have to go over your face twice (or more) the first time with a very rough beard trimmer that can potentially catch moles or other imperfections (ouch!)

-The head is quite wide, and there is a chrome plastic molding on the head which causes the edges/corners to be "dead" areas while shaving. In other words, you will often feel these "sharp" corners rubbing your face while shaving, which I found unpleasant. See the picture I posted for a view of what I'm talking about (sorry about the picture quality - its from my iPhone)

- No charging stand. This is a nit for a shaver in this price range, but because this shaver is built so solidly (and is heavy) it doesn't feel like a travel shaver. Consequently, I just expect it to have a charging stand

Bottom line, if you are looking for a well-featured but inexpensive "touch up" shaver to keep in your desk drawer at the office, or in the glove box of your car, the F5790 may be a great choice given its price point. However, if you are looking for an everyday shaver, I suggest you either spend more money (about double the price of this razor) or invest in a good quality bladed razor, bristle brush, and good shaving soap; you'll spend about the same amount of time shaving, but you'll get a much closer shave.

52.) Good... but it's no blade

I kept wavering between 2 stars and 3 stars on this review, and finally settled on 3 to give Remington the benefit of doubt.

My reason? My beard is pretty tough and wiry, and it might be too much to ask an electric shaver to give me a shave that is TRULY comparable to a top-of-the-line name-brand multi-bladed razor. (I use the 5-blade Gillette Fusion)

As for this Remington electric, it's "okay." Good, but certainly not great. The first thing that I noticed, is that it was fairly light compared to a couple of other electrics I've purchased over the years. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but the first thing that went through my mind when I pulled it from the packaging was "cheap!"

After letting it charge for a day, I gave it a shot, and it did a decent job on my face --but my neck was a different story. I don't know what it is about electric shavers and neck hairs, but they ALL seem to ignore approximately 1/2 the hairs that I have there. It's very strange, and I always have to go back over my neck with a real blade after I'm done.

The pivoting action is 'so-so.' It seems as if it tends to bind up a little bit, which might have something to do with the light-weight, 'plasticky' nature of the shaver.

Having never had a "light" beard, I can't say for certain, but I would imagine that it would probably do a much better job than it did on mine. If that's your situation --give it a shot.

But 'tough-beard' guys like me... stick with sharp metal.

I'm relegating this shaver to my desk drawer at work, should I ever find myself in need of a quick 'touch-up.'

First, some disclosure... I always shave with a razor blade as I have yet to ever find an electric razor that gets as close a a blade. Period. I own a Braun for "evening touch ups" and grooming my side burns. This is not the same old Remington razor from the 80's that you might remember from the TV commercials. This one is much more aerodynamic, sleek, holds a charge for a long time (2 weeks or so), and includes a cool LED gauge to let you know how much charge is left. It ergonomically fits in your hand (nicely curved) and I like the power button - right where your thumb normally rests and featuring the international symbol for "on off" that you usually see on higher-priced electronics. Though a little noisier than my Braun, this shaver is still acceptably quiet. The only negative I would point out is that the "build quality" seems a little cheap and flimsy. I will be curious to hear from other reviewers how theirs holds up. For me, given that I'll only use it occasionally, it's fine.

The Remington F5790 beats most of those razors I've used, but still doesn't cut it (pun intended).

Pro:
- Cordless and convenient.
- Less burn than any other electric I've used.
- Holds a charge for a long time. (I haven't plugged in the charger at all).

Cons:
- Shave isn't close enough without shaving for a long time.
- The pivot head doesn't pivot as well as I would have expected.
- It irritated my neck, most electrics do this.
- Although it has less burn it isn't burn free. I walked around with a big red mark on my chin after one particular shave.

If you are in the market for an electric, this is worth a look. It seems to be well made and works at least as good as all other electrics I've used. For me, it just doesn't shave close enough without spending at least double the time as using a blade.

I have used a rotary electric razor for the past 15 years. I maintain a full goatee on my face and am clean shaven everywhere else.

This Remington F5790 is the first Foil Shaver I have ever used. Right out of the box I immediately noticed how BIG the razor head is. The head easily takes up about half of the side of my face. In my hand, the razor feels big and bulky compared to the rotary razors I have used. While the razor head is advertised as a pivot head, it takes a fair amount of force to make the head pivot.

Peformance wise the razor performed pretty well. The foil razor has a much different feel than the rotary razor. I noticed that it would shave close to the skin, but it would just not get it quite clean shaven. I pushed harder against my skin and more would cut, but it still never felt completely smooth.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: I cannot get this razor to work with my goatee. Not only is the head so bulky that I find it hard to get flush with my goatee, but the trimmer attachment is a complete joke. I typically use the trimmer attachment to trim my goatee around my lips, etc. However, the Remington F5790 trimmer attachment is too small and sits right on top of the bulky razor head, making it impossible to tell where you are trimming when you turn the razor upside down. The trimmer attachment does not stick out from the body of the razor, but remains flush.

Overall I'm disappointed with the first foil shave, but the fact that I can't maintain my goatee with it gives it no chance to replace my rotary razor.

I compared this razor to my Braun Syncro, each one on one half of my face. Overall, the Braun is much better.

The Remington performed the basic shaving job, and even a little faster than the Braun due to more cutting surface area on the skin at one time (the main benefit of the triple-foil gimmick). However it did not shave as close as the Braun, and it was awkward to handle. Because of the bulkiness and shape of the Remington, I had a hard time getting it under my nose. The Braun is smaller, sleeker, lighter, and easier to maneuver.

The construction of the Remington seems cheap with thin plastic and the sort of fake plastic chrome you'd find on kids' toys. It doesn't seem like it could take much of a beating.

The current price on Amazon, from a non-Amazon vendor, is way too high -- around $120 with shipping. It's definitely not worth that price. A quick google search found several vendors selling it for around $55. Even at $55, I don't think I'd buy it. I prefer an electric shaver that shaves close. I have yet to find anything better than the Braun family in that regard.

Look for a better shaver (either a Braun or a manual blade), and be willing to pay more for a good electric shaver. Even at this price, I'm sure you can find something better.

I finally got the package open (this was no easy task and I had to use a sharp knife and practically cut the whole thing open to get at the shaver).

I am comparing the shaver to my 10 year old Braun electric shaver which is very reliable.

Here are the results:

1. An awkward feel in the hand (I'm used to holding the Braun)

2. The telescoping trimmer does not come out far enough to trim moustaches/goatees and it has a cheap feel to it

3. It pinches if you touch anywhere near longer hairs

4. It doesn't shave as close. I shaved and shaved and tried to get my face as smooth as when using the Braun, and the unit failed to do this, and also I feel like my face has been scraped raw

5. The 3 heads make a large shaving surface and you cannot easily trim around hair you want to keep (i.e. a goatee or moustache). You can't do detail work at all. I had trouble shaving my upper lip, and below my lower lip.

However, I found the design to be bulky compared with my regular shaver. Also, this one had some difficulty getting neck hairs. It is also somewhat loud."

Since he wasn't thrilled with it, I decided to try it myself. Except, of course, on my legs. I loved it! Not only do I not have to precariously balance amid wet soap in the shower to shave, but the beard trimmer lets me shave when I've gotten lazy and let things grow out a bit. Since the beard trimmer is larger than on other electric shavers, and the way it was positioned so I could easily grip it, I found I loved shaving my legs with it. I started with a mid-price Norelco (with the 3 rotary heads) and upgraded to a top-end Norelco with the full lift and cut system. I always had a problem with a chaffed neck, so I sought a new shaver. I finally found the Braun, and though I paid $200+, I never had a better electric shave. Since the Braun was so costly (and also came with a cleaning stand), I bought a PocketGo from Braun (about $10) for touch-up to keep in my briefcase. So I don't want to compare this $50 Remington to a $250 Braun, but I want to make it clear that I have used $10, $50, $150, $250 shavers, and have a good basis for comparison.

Out of the box, the Remington Pivot and Flex feels very well made. It has a good heft, feels solid, and has nice shiny chrome accents. I'm a big fan of LED power meters, and mine arrived fully charged. I pushed the button, and it hummed resassuringly.

I immediately examined the action. It consists of 3 independent foils that can spring up and down. The foils themselves can float vertically, and the cutters underneath are supported by a single spring in the middle. This single-spring configuration is similar to my cheaper Braun PocketGo. My higher-end braun has a large based around the cutter spring which allows vertical motion, but limits tilt. The remington is a cheaper design and does not limit tilt. In addition to the spring of all 3 foils and cutters, the whole head can pivot, osentensibly to follow the "lines of your face". There is a fine line in floating heads---they must follow the face, but apply enough pressure to actually cut. I was nervous just looking at the ability for a 3rd dimension of tilt that the shaver might not work well.

The shaver came with a brush, but no case. Not surprising given the cost. However, the cover for the foils does not snap on very well. My higher end braun has a similar plastic cover that stays on very well (and it also has a case, but I will excuse no case on a $50 shaver). My Braun Pocket-Go (the $10 one) also has no case, but a really nice mechanism keeps the foil cover in place. The Remington cover just does not stay on---you will need a case if you buy this shaver for travel.

When I tried to shave, it was like shaving with a brick. The entire head felt very hard and rough on my face. Amazing for a shaver with so much "play" in the head, but it just would not glide right (I normally dry shave, so this is a requirement). I understand there is a 3 week break-in period, but I have used enough shaver varieties to know what is normal and what is uncomfortable. In my opinion, the 3 foils are just too much for good control, and the springs are too hard. My Braun has 2 foils, and they work just fine. The three foils are too large and unwieldy, and while the spring did not seem to flex enough to make the shave comfortable, it didn't hold the head well enough to give me a good shave. I had some neck hairs left, and I went after them with my $10 PocketGo shaver.

A shaver is a device you will use every day for years. Get a good one (like the Braun 8900 series). If you need a cheap one, get the PocketGo (takes two AA batteries) which shaves almost as well as my 8900. I just can't find a place for a $50 shaver, especially one like the Remington. Looks nice, but just does not shave well.

I am a huge proponent of electric shaving and have been using a different brand for about 2 years now. (The reason I went electric was the so called 'razor blade effect' - blades costing more then razors etc... :) )

I have been using a higher end electric razor for 2 years now that has a cleaning system included...so it is fresh and clean after every use. I will not go into detail as that would totally not be fair to Remington.

I naturally got the opportunity to and wanted to test this razor as a 2nd unit/backup and for when I travel. I charged it for 24 hours before the first use, as recommended, and off I went into shave land....below are my thoughts:

Pro's: Low cost, removable/rechargeable battery, led indicator for charge level

Con's: VERY Loud, pivot does not work well, shave is too close for comfort

Naturally it is not fair to compare this to something that costs a lot more..but this item is just not worth purchasing in my opinion. It is a very loud and very cheap feeling razor. The shave is too close for comfort..ie. I have used it 2-3 times to review it and I am in pain...razor burn type pain..and if you have ever had that type of feeling then you know it sucks to walk around with it all day. I would much rather use a regular razor then spend $$ on this device... Yes, Remington has an affordable product here..but I don't see the value.

In the end, in my opinion, you get what you pay for and thus higher end models of electric razors will probably do more justice to your face then this device.

First, I should say that I've been using near-top-of-the-line Braun's and Panasonics for the last 7 years, and I didn't expect this Remington to be as good as those, given its price point. I like the Braun's for their hefty batteries, but I most prefer the Panasonics as they get just a bit closer more easily. (Why 2 Brauns and 2 Panasonics? I leave each one in a different place - none of them has worn out, though I've replaced the cutting foils.)

Given that you can find a good Braun or Panasonic (it hardly matters exactly which models as it's really just a matter of extra bells and whistles) for $80/90 if you look and wait for sales, I would avoid this one. Why?

1) Quality: All of the B's and P's I've had have been of obvious quality, and this one is clearly not of quality. It looks cheap, feels cheap, and I'll be surprised if it lasts.

2) Big design flaw: The cutting foils on this model 'float', as most do these days. The problem is that 'at rest' the are just barely recessed relative to their holder and the two 'arms' that support them on either side. This becomes relevant because this system just doesn't get as close to the skin, and leaves too much stuble. To deal with that, the natural reaction is to push the shaver harder against the skind. But when you do this, the cutting foils recede further and the arms and foil holder push into your skin unpleasantly.

3) There's no cleaning system with this. I used to clean my others with isopropyl alcohol, but I've gotten used to the P. cleaning system and I like it.

So what if you can only spend $50'ish and want an electric razor? Were I you, I'd save my money. I don't think you're going to be happy with this, nor do I think it'll last, meaning that in the end it's going to have been the most expensive of all.

I am not familiar with any of the Remington razors--this being the first one I've used. Starting off with the good of this razor are the following things:

Good:

1. Very appealing look
2. Solid construction

In light of the dearth of good qualities I will now give a more thorough review on why this is the case. The following are all related to the bad of this razor. What was misleading of this razor was the fact that it was so comfortable when shaving. As I was shaving, it was very smooth and seemed to glide across my neck. Thinking to myself, "very comfortable for such an inexpensive razor", I took the razor away from my neck and glanced, through the mirror, at what had been accomplished with the razor in my hand. I found my answer. The reason for this incredibly smooth and pleasant shave was the fact that it did not do any work--my light grizzle of a beard was still there! My neck had light growth on it, and this did not perform well on shaving it. I went over it multiple times and yet it still did not do what normally takes one swift motion of other razors I have tried. So this is were my review stops really. However the summary points of the bad are:

Bad:

1. Did not shave well
2. Could not find a way to take off the razor blade--for cleaning or replacing
3. Seems as if this is a steep price tag for what is gained in performance by this razor

I cannot recommended this specific razor, though I would not let this represent the entire line of Remington products. Even on a tight budget, I would suggest going in another direction here.

While this item does function acceptably as a razor, the trimmer is worse than useless. Due to the design of it all, you can not see the trimmer while using it. This means that you're guessing at where you're trimming, and that's a recipe for disaster. Loudness was not an issue for me. The pivot/flex feature feels flimsy however, and I wonder how long this electric razor will last under normal wear and tear. I normally use a Remington MS2-390 Microscreen Shaver, it was broken recently by rough baggage handling. I was hoping this razor would replace it, but because it is unusable as a trimmer, I'll be going out and getting another Remington MicroScreen 500 instead.

I've been using a variety of Braun models for shaving for over two decades. Could there be a "better mousetrap" out there? I thought I'd give it a try with the Remington F5790 LED Pivot & Flex Cordless Foil Shaver.

The trial has stopped. Poor Remington... I should have compared you to, say, a pair of scissors.

Here are the issues:

1. The pivoting head...doesn't. It really stays in whatever position it starts in. With considerable effort, I can push it hard enough on my face to change its angle of attack. Thus, it is at a good angle on some places on the face, and at a bad angle at others. The solution? Fix the head in one position... the middle setting position on the trimmer. OIf course, then you don't have a pivoting head...

2. Ah, yes, that trimmer. It extends to the height of the foils, not above. So when you try to use it, you are looking over about an inch thickness of the head of the razor. And so when you tilt it to trim that mustache, you can barely see the trimming edge. This is not a great way to get a clean, straight trim line.

3. For two days, I shaved one side with the Braun, and the other with the Remington. Then I switched. There are hairs that the Remington just doesn't cut, but my Braun does. I think that (non) pivoting head is a big part of the problem, but some hairs get missed even when it looks like the head is oriented correctly. Go figure. The foil?

4. It's holding its charge well. The little clear plastic cap to protect the foil is harder to snap on than I would have expected.

Overall, I can't recommend this model, at least compared to my Braun. I was going to take this Remington on a 3 week trip, but now I'm afraid that I've have a strange profile on my chin when I got home. And if I have to use a pair of scissors to clean up a shave, what is the razor good for, anyway?

This product is inferior to the many rotary shavers I have owned over the years. Its weaknesses include:

1. Foil technology doesn't cut as cleanly or completely. Even using the circular hand motion recommended in the instructions, I found areas on my face that were inadequately cleared, or hadn't been clipped at all.

2. Following shaving, my face and neck felt chafed (burned).

3. The trimmer cut well, but does not extend out sufficiently to allow precision when trimming mustache, sideburn, nose, and ear hairs.

4. Protective cap is cheap and doesn't fasten easily.

5. Clean-up isn't as simple as banging the ejected shaver head against the shaver body, as is easily done with rotary models.

Since I don't have enough testosterone to grow more than peach fuzz on my face I had to try the next best place to simulate a beard - yes, the "nether regions". I tried out the clipper part and though it cut the hair (and my husband has a surprise waiting for him), it still didn't get close to the skin.

My husband also tried out the shaver on his face and was not pleased with the results. He said it didn't cut any of his hair. He has course hair while mine is smooth. Still, it didn't shave either very well. A funny thing happened when I first started typing this review. My friend called and asked what I was doing and I told I was reviewing this shaver. She said she had just bought her husband a new electric shaver and went to get it. She came back to the phone and it turns out to be this very same shaver. Weird coincidence! Her husband has fine blonde hair and I could hear him answer her question as to how he liked it and he said, "It's great!" This one is also huge compared to my other razor and for all that size the battery life seems very short. The tilting head is what attracted me to this razor, and while it seems like a good idea it just doesn't work well; the swivel seems too tight so you get it not tilting at all as you move it across your face.

The one thing I do like about this is that the motor seems really strong and when I skip shaving for several days this will mow through a thick beard and get it short enough that I can switch to my other razor for the close work.

Having used various Braun, Norelco, and Panasonic shavers over the years, I decided that I could probably be almost as happy with an (relatively) inexpensive Remington. I figured Remington had to have tech as good as a 3-5 year old shaver from the big boys. Let's see how it went.

Design
Well, it's a shaver (and a big one at that), that's about it. Ergonomic--not really. Aesthetically pleasing--nope. Balanced--barely and could be quite a bit better. Quality--doesn't look or feel like it.

Handling
Decent, but not great. The poor design makes it harder to hold than its peers, and the head does a lackluster job of pivoting. While struggling to use it, you'll get serenaded with a loud rumble (though as others mentioned, it will mow through a thick beard). Battery life is adequate, but I expected more from such a huge shaver (maybe the big loud motor took up all the space).

Shaving
I gave it a few weeks, as some shavers/faces take a bit to work well together. Those weeks were frustrating, as it both irritated my face (about as much as my Panasonic with a broken foil and a 2 year old blade) and failed to get close. It did cut through thick hear, but never got close enough on my neck even with daily use. Irritation was reduced with regular use, but it never was acceptable (fyi I've been happy with Braun, Norelco, and Panasonic shavers).

Verdict
I should have either gotten new foil/blades for my Panasonic, bought better new electric, or go back to blades (my current plan). I wouldn't recommend this shaver.

I did have to work on my neck some with it, but I have to do that with a blade, too.
I noticed from the start that the pivot head pivots very easily and gets looser with use. The foil covers must be removed for cleaning daily. After two months, the plastic housing for the covers broke apart when I took them off to clean the razor.
In the end, this would be a great razor to see if foil shaving is for you, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

Due to the numerous passes, I had quite bad razor burn afterward. I also had the "5 O'clock Shadow" before I was done, as that was about the best result this product could offer.

Reviewed by: Larry F. Rogers Aplace, MA USA
Rating:
Let me start by saying this is a beautiful looking product, well packaged and appealing. But in the end, it comes down to function.

Remington did do something clever with this razor. For longer beards they integrated a trimmer to take the beard down to a level the razor can handle. It is a great idea...it just doesn't trim the beard down far enough.

Here is what I experienced using the razor:

THREE DAYS GROWTH

After three days my beard is about 1/4 of an inch. The razor could not deal with it, but the trimmer did a nice job of bringing it down. But the razor still could not deal with it. After shaving for nearly 10 minutes, I pulled out my rotary electric and finished the job in 2.

EVERY DAY SHAVING (ONE DAY'S GROWTH)

I feel I have a very easy beard to shave. My hair stands out well from the face and isn't all that long after one day...just stubble. The problem I found with this razor is it misses spots, which I also found with other foil razors I have used. You can repeatedly go over some areas and it will just not shave them despite the pivoting head. Another concern is how long it takes to shave with this razor. It took me at least 10 minutes to get to the point where I could touch up with a blade. I do not have that problem with rotary electrics (about 5-6 minutes). To its credit, what the razor did shave was smooth.

SUMMARY

If you shave every day and don't mind taking ten minutes to do it, then this could be a nice razor for you. The rotaries are faster and do an equivalent job with better coverage. If you are in the market for a razor, consider corded razors as well. Corded razors are better. They never leave you with an uncharged razor. They are always at full power while shaving. And they are more green ecologically (no battery to get rid of in a year or so).

Finally, don't buy an electric razor at all if you use a high quality blade. I have three electric razors that are major brand names. I also have one multiple edged blade razor from a major manufacturer. The blade is faster (2-3 minutes), never cuts me, and is less expensive to use. It also provides a shave that is an order of magnitude better than any electric. If you shave with a quality blade, you will never be completely satisfied with an electric.

This is my second and last Remington shaver. I bought the first one and returned it the next day because it wouldn't cut my stubble (which is medium, not terribly thick), and it hurt quite a bit. This one is no different. I tried using the shaver on one day growth and it didn't cut a single hair. Further, it hurt my neck and jaw as it went over those areas. The "flexible" head is hard to move back and forth, so it doesn't flex with your face unless you put a lot of pressure. The foils are larger and more rigid than other shavers I have used. Overall, this is not a good shaver to buy at any price. The pop-out trimmer has the same problem that other foil shavers have which is that it pops up so close to the foil that my hair gets caught in the foil when I trim my sideburns.

I have a Braun shaver that cost over $200 and it works wonders, I barely feel it on my skin, it flexes perfectly. I use to have a $50 Braun shaver as well and it was also pretty good (much better than anything Remmington makes). I've also owned two Norelco shavers (both over $200 and both triple blade designs) and my first Norelco felt very good but the newer ones are not as comfortable. Unlike many product catagories, even the best Men's electric shavers leave room for improvement. As a result, I find myself accumulating these shavers, always searching for something that is, perhaps, a bit closer to perfection or--at least--closer to good enough for me to stop my question for "the one". I own Panasonics, both top end (excellent) and mid-line (not so great), Brauns (mostly not my cup of tea) and Norelcos (almost always decent, some excellent). I haven't owned a Remington electric shaver in many years, but when Amazon asked me to review this one, I figured I'd give it a shot.

What a mistake. The minute I took the shaver out of the package, I knew this wasn't going to be good. The thing is REALLY clunky and, relative to the other electric shavers I've used, huge. I'm not sure why that is. It doesn't feel real solid. Just huge. Like someone in marketing told design "Men feel better about themselves with a huge shaver in their hand--put more air inside!" That huge, hollow feeling definitely imparts a real "cheapo" vibe.

But OK, I'm shaving with this, not displaying it on the mantle. The curb appeal is poor, but maybe it gets the job done.

So I charged it for 24 hours and started my evaluation. The minute I put this thing to my face, I knew this was going to get ugly REAL fast. This thing is INCREDIBLY poor at removing hair. I'd go over an area of my face. Then I'd go over it again. And again. And again. And again. With enough patience, I could, after a lot of work, remove a barely passable amount of hair from my face. But just barely passable.

After one day with this thing, I was ready to toss it. But in all fairness, some shaver manufacturers assert you need a week or two for your beard to adjust to the new shaver. So, OK, I gave it ten days.

The longest ten days of my adult shaving life.

It never got better. It took probably 3-4x as long with this shaver as with my Norelco (my current default shaver) to get an acceptable shave. And to be honest, it wasn't really very acceptable. In fact, after a few days, I would use a second shaver to do the final hair removal because even after wasting a lot of time with this thing I wasn't really ready for prime time...

At the end of ten days, I tossed this thing in the trash. Now it's time for the review and I can put this experience out of my mind.

The only positive thing I can say is that the shaver held its charge sufficiently to allow 10 days of shaves without a recharge. And trust me, that's a lot of shaver "on" time, since each of those shaves is painfully, ridiculously slow.

When I first started to shave, years ago, I inherited an old (corded) electric shaver from my Dad that was probably made in the '60s. I can honestly say that this shaver is WAY worse than that shaver.

I rarely give one star reviews, as I can usually find SOMETHING worthwhile about a product. Not here. This is hideous. Not worth owning at any price, and the asking price for this shaver (not cheap) boggles the mind.

If you really want one, rummage through my trash and help yourself :-)

I was extremely disappointed in this Remington shaver. I was really looking forward to trying this shaver out since it had been a few years since I had used an electric shaver. The first problem I had was the size of the shaver. It was larger and heavier than shavers I had used in the past. But I was willing to let that slide. After letting it charge for 24 hours I went to use it for the first time and found no results. It was not cutting anything. I don't know if it was because my facial hair was too short for the blades or if it was a problem with the shaver itself. Either way I was very disappointed. The only thing that did work was the trimmer blade. This was my first experience using a Remington shaver and if these are the results I should expect with their other shavers than I will be going back to using my normal razor.

103.) Waiting for my third F5790 due to hairpocket issue...

I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. I have had two F5790s and they have both had the same problem. After cleaning the cutting blades with the provided brush the hairpocket, that's the plastic holder for the foils, will not stay on the unit when its turned on. It just pops off. I am now waiting on my third F5790 from Remington hoping that they have discovered the design flaw and fixed it. To Remington's credit they have replaced the first two at no charge and shipped them to me for free.

As for the quality of the shave its a fair performer. Nothing to rave about but it does well enough for a morning shave.

104.) The head won't stay on!

Had a previous Remington and was looking forward to the improvements with this one. Not happy at all. The foil screen head will not stay snapped on and keeps coming loose during use. Only had the razor for two months, so this is unacceptable!

105.) Not Recommended

The Flex360 is light weight. The motor is way to light for this razor. The charge does not last the 20 days but more like 2-4 days. The 24 charge time is horrible for such a light razor. When the battery dies, the razor quits and does not have a quick charge function. This shaver does not shave very close. Leaves a rough finish shave almost like a 5 o'clock shadow. Worse yet, you cannot get screens or blades even from Remington....they are simply not to be found.

I have been a long time user of Remington products. I had to replace a microscreen razor which was of poor quality and now this. Recent quality is on the nose dive with Remington products. I am no longer buying Remington razors.

Save your hard earned money and do not purchase this razor.

Features of Remington F5790 LED Pivot & Flex Men's Rechargeable Cord/Cordless Foil Shaver

Advanced Pivot & Flex Technology gives you an ultra-close, ultra-clean look. Each of the 3 foils flex independently while the neck pivots making it incredibly comfortable. The 3 foils allow you to shave in a third of the time you would compared to a single foil shaver. Its Titanium coated trimmer foils are strong and durable. The Remington F5790 rinses clean easily under the faucet. This shaver is complete with cord/cordless use, a 5 minute quick charge, battery fuel gauge, and a 3 position pop-up trimmer. It can be recharged for a runtime of 60 minutes. Product includes a 30-day money-back guarantee and 2 years limited warranty.

The Remington F-5790 Foil Shaver is a pivoting electric razor that delivers a clean and comfortable shave, even at awkward angles. Using three titanium-coated foils and a pivoting, swiveling neck, the razor allows you to shave closely--without nicks. It also features an ergonomic grip, a pop-out trimmer, and a backlit LED gauge that clearly displays battery life.

3 flexing foils
The pivoting neck and 3 flexing foils follow the contour of your face and neck for an exceptionally close, comfortable shave.

Shaver Adjusts to the Contours of Your Face
The F-5790 features a flexible, pivoting design that allows you to negotiate the difficult angles of your face. Thanks to Remington's advanced Pivot & Flex technology, the shaver rolls over your chin and jawbone with ease. With up to 10% more pivot than other leading foil razors, the F-5790 maintains better contact with your skin, so you get a cleaner shave.

Top-Quality Blades Deliver a Close, Gentle Shave
With titanium coating, the F-5790's blades are heavy duty, yet they deliver a nick-free shave. Because of their hardy titanium finish, the foils are resistant to dulling. Also, the titanium surface keeps things gentle, guarding against cuts, scratches, and irritation.

Additionally, the shaver's three foils provide a greater total cutting area and enable a much faster shave. Each of the foils moves and flexes independently to make shaving comfortable. The blades are also completely washable, and they rinse quickly and easily under a faucet.

Designed for Easy Operation
The F-5790 has an arching, ergonomic design, making it easy and comfortable to grip; this alleviates stress on your hand while you shave. The shaver also has a color LED, which clearly indicates battery life and gauges remaining time.

For further convenience, the F-5790 features a pop-out trimmer that's ideal for detail work like sideburn trimming. The trimmer has three positions--lock, intercept, and trip--making it a versatile addition to your grooming kit.

Long-Lasting Battery Allows for Cordless Operation
When operated cordlessly, the F-5790 relies on a high-performance NiMh rechargeable battery for power. The battery, which takes only two hours to fully charge, provides up to 60 minutes of cordless shaving time--enough for 30 shaves. If you're in a hurry, the shaver also has a quick charge-mode, which gives your battery a time-saving boost.

Additionally, the F-5790 accepts universal voltage, so it can be used and charged worldwide. It is backed by Remington's two-year manufacturer's warranty.
